So I’ve been having trouble with my left leg collapsing. I told my primary, he didn’t really do or say much regarding the issue as he was there to see me about another issue going on. Given the fact he didn’t say anything, and I’m well enough to walk around without a walking cane on a good day, is it a bad idea to use a cane to try and prevent further falls and to use to relieve back pain when standing in really long queues for about thirty minutes? I feel like I’m effectively a fraud when thinking about using a cane, because I’m not sure if I truly need a cane if I’m only falling about once a week spontaneously (though it used to be a lot less frequent). The past few falls have caused significant pain flare ups in my left hip and leg as well.

@Akashiva I totally get that. Canes are not as user friendly as they look lol. That’s where I’m at as well I go to PT to strengthen my legs and back. I hope your stability improves!

No shame in the cane my friend. I use mine when I’m walking for long distances (like the zoo) but it’s not long enough for me to bring my walker (Disney land yikes) I don’t need it walk usually but it helps in more ways than one. In addition to stability, and I really hate to say it, it lets people know I’m disabled. This means people will usually make space for me to sit down if I’m standing by them or they will be more careful about bumping into me. I’d recommend trying a brace and or a cane to help out. Best of luck!

@Soskae depending on my diagnosis (when I get a referral) I may need a leg brace but as of current I’m just focusing on strengthening my legs and upper body in whatever ways I can Just recently got a cane and it does help (mostly over my embarrassment, but it still feels a little awkward)

There are dynamic disabilities. It is true that there will be ignorant people who might question it. Frankly, it’s not their business. You are invalidating yourself and your experiences. If someone else was experiencing the same things and thought using a cane might help, what would you tell them?

I agree with Calibird. There is no shame in using a cane. I use mine often because of my pain. I used to pass out about 6 times a day. I used my cane for times when I thought I might need it. I know longer pass out because I have a pacemaker but I still use my cane to help me with pain.

Have you tried wearing a leg brace? Also,no shame in using a cane if you feel like it would benefit you, sometimes you just need to lean on something

@Calibird just got a cane actually and it does help tremendously! I still get lower back pain after standing awhile but at least I’m not falling :>

@Akashiva Still feel a bit self conscious but it’s not as bad as I thought it might be
