Does anyone have any tips for public speaking anxiety? I never really had an issue with public speaking until college. I was never really all that nervous about it before and actually used to consider myself to be very good at public speaking. In high school I spoke in front of the entire school countless times, spoke at graduation, and a ton of other stuff. But since college started I’ve gotten worse and worse and now I get so anxious and I just freeze. I’ve taken speech classes and it doesn’t matter how much I prepare.

I find it best to zone out and don't focus on the crowd of people. Though I never seem to be able to remove the anxiety itself. It is manageable by knowing well what I'm saying and not focusing on the crowd

ok so I used to have the worst public speaking anxiety bc I went from shy, to super outgoing. the best tip I have is to practice what you’re gonna say alone, then find 1 person to say it to, then add 2 more people. when you go to present it, choose 3 people in various areas in the room to make eye contact w. I suggest picking friends. pretend everyone else in the room is asleep. chances are if they aren’t your friends they aren’t paying attention anyways.

im in the same boat - i publicly spoke in HS but in college my anxiety really got to me when it came to that! in most of my college speeches or presentations (given i majored in art), i had to hype myself up a little before (listened to music that made me feel like a badass, got myself a coffee) and i would try to present early on if that was an option. then you can relax when its over with! i would remind myself that other people feel like they don't know what they're doing or they're nervous or didn't prepare too well. just rolling with it and having the confidence in yourself that you know what you're talking about- even if you lose your place or mess up. people will roll past those moments as the presenter does :)

@PeppermintAnn i think going first might actually help me! I won’t have to deal with comparing myself to the people who went ahead of me and I think everyone cuts you some slack if you mess up lol, thanks!!

I find fidget toys help me a lot. Quiet ones that don't make sounds. Some people like to listen to music without words that invoke the same feeling they wish to convey in their speach.

@LaiKira I’m not sure if I’d be able to use that when I actually present but I’ll definitely try it next time I’m practicing! Thanks!!

I know for me a big reason I struggled was the thought of everyone judging me and looking down on me but to be honest everyone else is probably just as nervous and you just have to be confident in yourself that you’re the best speaker in that room. Confidence changes everything. Hope that helped a little!

@careeryeti thanks! I think i really started to doubt myself in college though because I went into the honors program and a lot of people here went to prestigious college prep/ private schools and I noticed pretty quickly that they all seemed a lot more professional/ eloquent than I do. I also have ADHD so my brain just works a lot differently than a lot of people. I think after three years it’s just weighed on me so much and feeling like I don’t fit it makes me feel really judged whenever I’m speaking in front of them
