I’m meeting my boyfriend’s family in a few weeks…he knows I have a super restrictive diet due to my ED (like borderline the diet of a toddler) but 1) he won’t tell me where I’m going so I can’t check the menu 2) I don’t like eating in front of people it makes me cry or sick 3) he lives kinda in the middle of nowhere and he’s driving so there’s no way for me to get food on the way back to his parents place…I don’t know what to do. I don’t wanna disappoint him, but I really don’t do well eating in restaurants. I cant even eat in front of my family at home…I feel so stuck…

I had a similar situation at a boyfriends family Thanksgiving, so awkward to have a half empty plate and barely eat anything on that day. I will say though when I started being honest with people and just saying I have an eating disorder, I have difficulty eating in front of people (It took me along time to be able to do that). Or I would also have my boyfriend say tell his parents a head of time if I was having and eating disorder relapse and that way no one asks questions at dinner. It takes all the pressure off and I think it’s better that people know that you are aware of the issue and working on it.

Awe so sorry!! Totally understand! I had been afraid to eat infront of people for so long! Probably because when I did, my parents would call me fat or a glutton. Whatever still recovering. Your boyfriend probably is trying to protect you from yourself by not telling you where you are going to it. It is sweet but definitely not the right way to go about it. What you have to explain to him is ED are closely connected to anxiety. The more anxious we are the worse it gets. Going into an eating situation blind is traumatic. If he cares about your ED he will definitely give you all the space you need to figure out what to do. The other commenter said eating before is a good idea. Don’t do anything you aren’t comfortable with! Proud of you for trying to get out there even though it’s hard! Let us know how it goes!

Is there any way you can eat before hand so that you can eat very little at the restaurant? I'm sorry your going through this 😥
