My sister in law told me that EMDR is specifically for PTSD and NOT C-PTSD, and that I absolutely should not try it, but I've been told different things by others. So, anyone with C-PTSD who has tried EMDR, what was your experience with it?

I have CPTSD and I've started EMDR recently with my therapist, I've only had a couple of sessions but I found it's really helped me so far.

I have CPTSD and my therapist did months of EMDR with little affect. It wasn't her fault it didn't work but it was worth a shot.
I've heard of a few successful cases. But CPTSD isn't really understood enough for her to make such a definitive statement, especially with the successful cases, some still think it might be a subset of PTSD that still uses the same treatment methods. Currently it's more of a case by case thing.

I did it. It was really difficult to open up. I had a trained therapist but she wasn’t MY THERAPIST so it didn’t really work to help me open up. I did help me access some memories that I later used to help me heal but there are definitely other ways. I think it works well for those “one time trauma” events. But it’s not exactly as effective if your trauma was multiple different things and ongoing.
@KSage11 I'd agree. My therapist thought EMDR would be the cure for my CPTSD, but with my recurring trauma it was more triggering than helpful. Looking into somatic therapy now.
My spouse used it and saw positive results. I think its honestly a case by case basis
Didn’t work well for me but maybe I didn’t do it for long enough and I wasn’t with a trained professional exactly. It triggers you and you need the right environment to process that trauma and calm down after I guess. I think the idea is that if you do it regularly for a bit you become desensitized to it and then being on high alert would happen less in your daily life. Probably more effective for PTSD because they have a sense of “normal” to return to whereas for cptsd it’s kind of just life
I have CPTSD and EDMR was suggested for me. The idea is to desensitize you to your trauma. Even if it isn’t as effective for CPTSP, I don’t see how it would hurt to try.
