I would like to know how do you get people to listen to the type of symptoms you have at the age of 20. they tell me I'm too young to be getting all these type of test. sometimes I wonder is because I'm black or not vomiting blood.

My primary didn’t really find any concerns in my symptoms, thinking it was just depression or my autoimmune disorder. I then had to see my nurse practitioner for a zoom call to follow up, and thankfully she believed me, and got me a rheumatologist (the specialist who deals with that kind of stuff, and the ones I’ve had are good at believing and figuring out). It all depends on the doctor. I had a horrible pediatrician who caused me to suffer for years with hashimotos. She didnt ever test for it, a neurologist i’ve been seeing for headaches since i was 7 (… yes I am medically advanced). It caused me to gain a fear of not being believed. However you probably will have a harder time finding help as well because you’re black. I may be white but I know that doctors dont take bipoc seriously and frequently dismiss read concerns. Other than finding a black doctor who is less likely to take your skin color into account, I can’t help with much else there since I don’t experience medical racism.

As a black woman I understand you’re concern especially because most of the time the doctors are middle age white men or old white men.. A few years ago I decided to change primary care doctors (a black woman) and she listens to me.. she understands me! If you’re doctor isn’t black I highly recommend you finding one that is…I’ve been dealing with fibromyalgia for 6/7 years and everyone keeps telling it’s fibromyalgia because I have all of these symptoms but my test seem normal.. I’m finally at a point of acceptance and just trying to cope.

Being black definitely has something to do with it. I was 21 when I got a fibro dx but it had been something doctors were telling me for several years. I underwent lots and lots of testing for lots and lots of things that shouldn't affect a child or a teenager (spoiler alert: they did, the testing ended up being warranted). I also have the benefit of being 3/4 white. As far as getting someone to take you seriously, you just have to keep trying new people until you find someone with brain cells and empathy who got into medicine to help people, not to make money. Those doctors exist, you just gotta persist. Aside from race, luck is a huge component in getting good medical care

Ive been sick my whole life and noone cared till I was 25. The only things that have sort of worked is going in not willing to take no for an answer and bringing a bunch of your own research. I went into the rheumatologist with my medical history, clear blood work, my family history of fibro, and full knowledge of the diagnostic material and reasonable treatments. Also research the doctor before hand. Ppl will talk about them sending them away with nothing. It is really hard and nothing is guarenteed.

Honestly it’s extremely difficult even though I have been dealing with chronic illness since I was 11 years old. I am now 26 and I was having serve throwing up and no one could figure out why. It is all about finding the right doctors and knowing the history of patients they have dealt with and having enough experience to be able to help you
