okay so I know with anxiety, depression, and thinking patterns the brain has to be retrained...I don't know how to ask this with out it sounding stupid ?.. 🤦‍♀️ I have been trying retrain my brain for almost 5 years it's really the most difficult thing I've ever experienced ! and I know that's how some people heal ! I guess what I'm trying to ask has anybody actually done these things to retrain your brain and it actually work.... why is it so damn hard ?! I don't know how else to ask it 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I hope that makes sense lol and one more thing does anybody believe they are spiritually damaged?

Spiritual damage can be a constant drive for the anxiety obsession and depression always follows. I am healing from a lot of big traumas in my life, and it’s been nearly a year since the last thing happened. I am not reset from severe anxiety and nor do I think it will let up soon. My point here is to be easy on yourself and take the time to keep working on it. You will in time feel better but it takes consistency. Give it the time to air out and change patterns. The definition of insanity after all is the process of doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. Try some new things and don’t be afraid, these new methods may work, and if they don’t, at least you tried it 👏🏻👏🏻

EMDR therapy has been the answer for me after attending CBT therapy for 7 years. Technology has also been a huge factor for me. We are fed negativity constantly on social media. In fact, I love using this app more than FB but my fingers automatically go to open the FB app out of habit when I’m bored. I turn off my notifications so I’m not sold to every waking moment. I also downloaded positive affirmation/mindfulness/planner apps etc to keep my goals in focus and keep a constant flow of positivity in my line of sight. It takes sooo much repetition. But eventually, you can and will form a new neural pathway that will eventually feel as normal as the not so great one’s right now. There are also some things you can’t outthink and I made the mistake of thinking I could and avoiding medication for a long time. But the medication has increased my ability to participate better in therapy and utilize the skills I learn.

@smkeaton may I ask what exactly EMDR is ? I have heard of it. But don't know much about it. I'm on CBT now. And yes I agree technology can be very very negative. I like this app much better then any other apps. But I still do find myself on TikTok way more then I would.like to admit. I also have Snapchat to talk with my nieces mostly and Instagram. May I ask what apps you downloaded for that ? And that's me .... I think I'll be okay with out antidepressants and just antianxiety medication. But that isn't working. But I am terrified to take antidepressants beacuse everytime I have they have made me feel worse or nothing at all and I have a fear of seratonin syndrome 🤦‍♀️

@beautifulDisasterxo EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing”. It was discovered to help reprocess trauma in the body after studying how our REM sleep works. It’s pretty interesting. I found my EMDR therapist on mentalhealthmatch.com and do virtual appointments. It would be easiest to delete social media apps altogether, but I haven’t found the strength to do that yet. Lol. But you can limit what you see/who you’re friends with etc. I’ve joined a lot of different support groups on FB for example and that has helped to fill my feed with more relatable posts compared to friends vacations photos that inevitably make me feel like crap. If you go to my page and click on “messages” you will find my post where I actually asked the community what apps work best for them! Lots of great suggestions there. I Am, Finch, Affirmations, Pause, Nipto.. those have worked for me so far. I am also wondering if it’s possible for you to find a therapist and/or psychiatrist who specializes in hypochondriasis? Not to sound presumptuous, but based on some of your other posts too, it seems like a lot of your anxiety is coming from that. It is also important to find professionals you can really trust. I had a bad experience with a therapist that caused me to not seek out therapy again for a long time. Thankfully I finally did and am doing better now that I have someone who really heard me out. I went through 4 therapists before her who denied I had bipolar disorder or ADHD. Sometimes we really have to advocate for ourselves and that is so, so hard when we’re literally just trying to find help and relief. It can take a long time to find the right combination of medication/coping skills that work best for you. I’ve definitely had my moments where the meds weren’t helping and I was ready to give up altogether. That is where a solid psychiatrist comes into play. Don’t be afraid to ask for a longer appointment time so you can really explain yourself without being rushed. Just remember that you have come this far already. Sometimes the best place to start in finding solutions is to know what DOESN’T work for you. You got this. Don’t give up. Best of luck! ❤️ Ps. Feel free to message me anytime 😊

I totally understand this!! It is really hard to retrain your brain. And, if you don't continually practice it, you loose it and revert back to old ways. It's so frustrating! I find that DBT is easier for me than CBT. It's the same concept, just applied differently.

        @dolphinblues what is DBT?

Another recommendation for you: the beginning of trying to retrain my brain started years ago and I didn't seem to make much progress. About 5 years ago, I decided to try something extra. I might not always identify the thinking that would turn me into a depression or rather deepen it, but, when I started to realize that I was in that downward phase, I would do something very. Caesar Milan and shock myself out of it. I might go to a random karaoke bar, pick a song that I knew really well and get up there and belt it out in front of strangers. Certainly clears the anxiety and depression away. Or if it was summer, go grab my swimsuit and find the nearest public body of water you can actually swim in legally... Lol and go jump in. The concept really boils down to picking something that is completely and as much as possible off kilter from anything you normally do. The sheer strangeness of it, the utter left turn in reality stands a very good chance of helping you correct course. If nothing else, they make really good conversation starter. Lol

I think the fact that you are even asking this question is proof your training is working even when it doesn't feel like it. For me it's like I didn't even know my thoughts were anxiety and depression talking, if that makes sense. Now I can recognize it and "challenge" those thoughts.

      • beautifulDisasterxo

        517d

@iamgrootofarendele I really didn't think about it like that... Thank you ! And yes makes complete sense! I myself sometimes don't think my thoughts or symptoms are anxiety or depression

        • iamgrootofarendele

          516d

@beautifulDisasterxo yeah it's definitely challenging to recognize it. I'm still learning and unlearning things. Idk if you have heard of the book Atomic Habits, it's not really about mental health but it does mention something along the lines as "when you are working towards something, you don't always see your own progress. For example, if you improve by 1% each day , it seems small, but at a year it's 365% better. " (This is a very rough paraphrase lol I read it in 2020, but It really stuck with me).

I understand what you're saying. I have been able to stop automatic negative thoughts and retrain my brain through its neuroplasticity. I practiced stopping the negative automatic thought and the more I practiced the easier it became. Eventually my automatic thoughts became positive more often. I trained and conditioned my brain to have healthier thoughts.

      • beautifulDisasterxo

        517d

@KateCod I try so hard to stop the negative thoughts in there tracks but it's SO hard ....and it sucks beacuse even in positive situations I will pull the negative right out !!!!! May I ask what neuroplasticity is ?

        • JayNJ

          517d

@beautifulDisasterxo neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to be rewired and change.

Does every human being learn math best with the same methods? No. There are people who learn fractions with a song and people who learn them with a visual pie metaphor, because different people learn in different ways. The same holds true for mental health. You can't really compare your progress to that of anybody else because you learn in different ways, and life has given you different "teachers." There's no rule that says "because you have XYZ, you need XYZ to treat you." People are complicated, there are no quick fixes, and most mental illnesses are chronic diseases.

        517d

@ZappyRacc makes sense. I was just curious if it was a actual thing if it helped ect.

I went and looked at your profile, you're between 30-32 and you have been trying to retrain your brain for 5 years. 5 vs 32 - give yourself more time honey cuz it may take a whole nother lifetime to fully retrain your brain. Do NOT beat yourself up over it.

      • beautifulDisasterxo

        518d

@Tionne idk if I have much time left in me ! It's so exhausting! I can't handle it anymore !

        • JayNJ

          514d

@beautifulDisasterxo Tionne's point, I think, is that you can't undo 30+ years of anything in just the snap of your fingers. It's hard, but you can. If you don't succeed, that's okay. Not trying again is where problems develop. If something doesn't work for you, talk to yourself and others (here?) about why it didn't work out. Patience and Compassion for yourself, Communication with others. I believe in you. You are just as much beautiful as you are disaster, and from a certain points of view, disasters can be beautiful - when they allow for new growth.

    • Tionne

      518d

I know exactly what you mean. And it is definitely one of the hardest things I've ever had to deal with in my life, if not THE hardest because you live your entire life thinking a certain way (for me it's 30+ years) and now you're trying to undo all that you know or feel in order to try to get your life on a different track or to move in a different direction. So yeah, that's pretty damn hard to unwire especially considering the brain is still the least understood organ in our bodies (I don't know how else to word that last sentence so I hope it made sense lol)

      • beautifulDisasterxo

        518d

@Tionne yes exactly!!!! Made total sense. It's like our brains are use to thinking a certain way for SO LONG that's all it knows !!!!! Then we just have to try our hardest and fix it ?! Hands down hardest thing EVER ! It feels almost impossible

(By common feeling I mean you’re not alone, we all can feel this why.)

    • Strawberry_Princess

This is a common feeling to have. I think with prayer, therapy specially CBT therapy is VITAL while coinciding with medication. You can get better. Don’t believe the lies your head tells.
