I also *hated* essays... Still do. I find that the brainstorming process is the part that I need the most of. So I read articles based off of it and take quotes from the articles that I'm wanting to use and extrapolate on it as much as possible and literally just word vomit onto the page with notes and notations as to like where I'm going with my thought process. I write like twice the amount I need to have in my paper and then I just reorganize it and cut stuff out. So write down everything that you want to say about it and word vomit and then organize it and cut it down after time. I used to hate all writing but I have gotten to enjoy text-based role-playing. So there is hope? I really can't do an essay that's longer than like a page.

One thing that has helped me SO MUCH is just writing a sort of “joke” paper where I write down my information in the vague order of how I want it, but I write everything SUPER informally, so it’s much easier to get out of my brain (I’m not searching for those perfect words🤌🏻), and then from there, I just sort of reword and rearrange things! I don’t know if that makes any sense but pls feel free to hit me up if it sounds interesting! I love writing papers but adhd has always made them so hard for me to actually start/get done so I definitely feel you🙏🏻

Also when I say joke paper, I am usually writing things like “here’s my intro sentence bc I don’t wanna write one right now” and “ayooo we’re getting close here’s my closing sentence”. Anything that makes the process slightly more enjoyable and fun for you🙏🏻

Don’t worry about being perfect the first time. Just write down whatever is in your head and write tons of drafts. I promise each one will get better.

i have adhd, and oddly i like writing papers. i feel satisfied when i’m done. the thing that helps me keep on track is a bullet outline of the paper. bullet all your information or thought you want to write about, even if it’s not in order. that way you don’t forget something that you wanted to talk about. then i just rearrange them later

I used to do this too! I would make quick bullet points or single sentences of each paragraph that I want to cover. No inner critic. Then I flesh out the paper afterwards with pretty words to make it readable.

If you're doing it from home, keep your shoes on. It tricks your brain into being productive bc it'll associate them with being busy

I did not know that, that’s fascinating

I forgot where I read it but it helped me a lot in college. Super uncomfortable when you're in your bedroom though. You'll have to fight the urge to mindlessly take them off lol

for me essay writing is horrible because of executive dysfunction. i can't do it because the whole essay is such a big task so I can't start it. i try to split tasks like that into parts to get past the mental block of how daunting the entire thing is. if you're struggling to get started just try to get your ideas/points down in bullet form or however. don't focus on starting it in essay format or a perfect outline. just figuring out what you wanna do can make the rest much easier to start doing
