Have you tried the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)? And if so, how has that affected your IBD?

I have!! I did the SCD for about a year when I was 14. It definitely helped me, but I think it varies a lot. I’d recommend the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gloria Guttschall, it helped me navigate the diet a ton, and check with your doctor before starting it because it’s a huge shock to your system at first

@ERL Thank you for your insight! Out of curiosity, why did you stop the diet? Did you notice symptoms after ending it? Online is full of success stories, but I've never gotten to hear from someone who stopped the diet and I'm curious if you find yourself recommending it to anyone (or if you've found something else that works better). I've been on it now for 1.5 years since my GI doct recommended it, and agree that it helps immensely but can't attest to it being any cure for my Crohn's just yet. I've read that it can take an average of 2 years to "full recovery" for Crohn's with this diet, and that mini flares along the way as bad bacteria can lay dormant, but I can't say that it's been a cure for me thus far by any means. I do think SCD has been essential throughout my flares (maybe it helped minimize them?) vs when I wasn't on SCD with prior flares. It's helped me digest nutrients better, keep my weight normal, have energy to workout, and significantly reduce/get rid of diarrhea especially when resetting with the intro diet. I haven't been able to tell though if the "mini flares" and "2 years part" is actually a for real things as part of it's long term healing or SCD just helps minimize the flare. Because my current medications aren't doing enough for me, I'm about to switch to Inflectra infusion, and it's tough for me because I really wanted this diet to work. But I've been dealing with blood, mucus, gas, and inflammation that's just not going away with current medication and SCD diet. I'll still be on scd though, as I have a personal goal to hit that 2 years mark at least. Glad you mentioned Elaine's book for anyone else thinking to start the diet, as it's hugely helpful and great start before reading online articles/recipes.
