For a while my mom wanted me to go to a therapist but I know the things I'm saying will be told right back to her and I don't want that, especially since the therapist would be there so I can talk to an outside person. I am not on medication and nor am I getting better, should I go to a therapist or keep going by myself?

I personally believe therapy is always a good idea, if you have access to it! If you’re over 18, it’s entirely your choice whether the therapist reports back to your mom. As soon as I hit 18, I was given the option to sign a release form to let my therapist’s office give my mom information about my appointments, medications, etc. Unless you’ve signed that release form for a specific person, by law your therapist and their office can’t share any of your information. If you’re under 18, you unfortunately don’t have that kind of control. I went through a similar experience and sometimes it was very uncomfortable, but the difficult conversations about things I didn’t want my mom to know actually ended up bringing us closer. Obviously I can only speak from my own experience and I don’t know your situation or your relationship with your mom, but if you’re struggling it will probably be helpful to see a professional.
