@tastycupcakes is definitely correct on focusing on breathing, but also finding ways to distract yourself can help. I tend to watch baby sensory videos or play simple but challenging puzzle games to distract myself (nonograms are my go to)

I get lost in music. If I’m alone I belt out my favorite tunes and my brain is so focused on the beat and melody and lyrics I tend to calm down. Something with an intense bass helps too, Astronaut in the Ocean is a good one to calm me

Using traditional grounding techniques, I would say engage with your senses in this situation. Try touching different textures, closing your eyes and just listening to whatever you can, or looking for an describing objects out loud. Make noises, make movements big or small with your body, or even just stretch.

My therapist recommended picking a color and looking for every object that you can see in that color. You can move on to another color afterward if you choose. another thing that’s been helpful for me is doing things rhythmically that use both sides of my body. I crochet, which has been really helpful for me, but you could also try other things like tapping your hands on your legs one after the other, etc. The technical term is bilateral stimulation and it can be really helpful for self soothing.

I know this is after the fact, but lately I've been trying to focus on something else, when I'm in the taxi in traffic and it happens, I focused on how many times the car in front of me lights went off, and on 🤷🏾 it might not help you, but it's a suggestion, focus on something else

EFT tapping! I use it a lot during class, especially when i’m stressing out over a test. It’s basically tapping on your meridian points to rebalance your energy and release tension. https://www.healthline.com/health/eft-tapping#technique

Best thing when there's nothing else around is to focus on your breathing. Big deep breaths that fill your chest out will can push on a nerve in your spine that can help calm your heart rate down.
