Hi all! I’ve been working with a licensed ADHD coach to help with executive function skills. The one I seem to struggle with the most at the moment is activation, which is the worst with getting out of bed in the morning. I woke up about an hour ago and have been on my phone since then, and even found this app and told myself “it’s ok because i’m being productive!” (even tho, let’s be real, i’m stalling having to get out of bed) — What helps you all get out of bed in the morning that leaves you no choice but to get out of bed? For me, the mental desire to want to get up isn’t enough to activate my motivation, I need an external source.

      I do the exact same thing every morning. I'm on my phone for at least an hour before doing something. But planning things in the morning is a good way to get over it. Like when I have class, I know I need to get up and go. Or I'll book an early yoga class. Or plan to go to breakfast with friends. Once I'm up and take my medication I usually can finally start a productive day. Unless I lie down again. Then I'll do nothing for hours lol

      Plan something rewarding? For me, the only way ican get out of bed in the morning to get to work on time is by bribing myself with Starbucks the night before. Like "okay, if we get up early I can get a mocha cookie frap!" LOL Try planning something you'll look forward to enough to get out of bed. Preferably something you're currently hyperfocusing on. Like a favorite breakfast or activity.

      I’m right there with you. The only thing that has helped me is if other people are counting on me: work, school, meetings, appointments. Other than that, it’s mostly just waiting until I really need to go to the bathroom.

      Dogs tbh. My maternal instinct is stronger than self preservation so having something I have an extreme drive to take care of gets me up at 7:00 everyday to take care of them, I can tidy up sometimes because I want them to have a clean space etc. I get out of the house everyday and practice being calm everyday because I know it’s better for them which ends up being better for me.

      Maybe try buying yourself a new morning face wash... Or something really yummy and convenient for breakfast. Make the morning something to look forward to and change it up.

      It helps me to get excited about something that's outside of my bed, and to not do the thing I think I need to do. For example, maybe I know I need to start getting dressed because I'm going to be late for work, but I just don't want to more than I have to. But maybe I get excited about putting on make up instead. Don't need make up to leave on time, but doing something that makes me happy in that moment tends to create a bit of motivation to putting on work clothes after.

      What helps me get out of bed is having something pressing I need to do. (Ex: go to class). When I don't have anything pressing, I try and break down tasks as small as possible. Like "first sit up. And if that's as far as I get for now, that's okay.". The idea is that if you do the first little step then you might as well do the next little step. (Ex: swing one leg over the side of the bed)
