I had three meningioma brain tumours diagnosed in March 2020, had a craniotomy for the largest that gave me memory issues and caused me to do a round trip in the January one night driving around 400+ miles and crashing my car. I’ve just completed 30 zaps of radiotherapy on the 2nd of November losing most of my hair yet again and was told these tumours were caused by the radiotherapy I received for leukaemia treatment I had in 1988. I haven’t felt well enough to work and have my 85yr old mum and 16 yr old son here which I’m trying to do but already having 12 months of not being allowed to drive but now in the middle of another 6 months not being allowed to drive. I somehow managed to get three speeding tickets giving me 9 points and a £300 fine the night I went awol, and just did a speed awareness course so I didn’t lose my license completely. The night I was apparently speeding I don’t remember but my brother paid the fine before it doubled so admitting liability but I guess I was driving so can’t argue with that. Just get fed up with trying to survive with no income and relying on maintenance and family allowance but using savings I’d worked all my life for. I’m so grateful to still be here and having family around me but is hard trying to please everyone, I don’t need anything except my family to be happy and cared for.

It sounds like you’ve been through the wringer! That must be very scary and I know how stressful it is to have no income and trying to support your family. I live in the US, and when I was in that situation, I applied for and finally got disability, but it took two years. Those two years were really hard, because I had so little coming in and so many medical bills! I had my meningioma removed in November, 2021, and in January, 2022, they installed a VP shunt to “tap off” brain fluid as my intracranial pressure is too high. That whole not driving thing is HARD! I live in the city, so I can take the bus or get a Lyft or an Uber pretty easily, thank heavens. It’s just not safe for me to drive sometimes, even though I love driving. Is there a process to go through to get disability benefits where you live so you’d have some income at least?
@BraeburnGirl I tried but as I wasn’t working a few months before this and not disabled enough to get other benefits I’m stuck. As soon as my son is 18 I won’t even receive child benefit of maintenance from his dad but as soon as April is here and I’m allowed to drive again I can look for work further afield just stuck at the mo living on the outskirts of a large town isn’t too bad as only a short walk to bus stop just frustrating wanting to work but struggling to find anything. Thank you.
