PSA: Find a doctor that listens to you and keeps up with the ever changing science of medicine. I see SO many people on here complaining about their doctors - just leave!

This, absolutely. I stayed with one doctor for too long, who was decent with more straightforward medical issues but awful about gaslighting and dismissing symptoms if she didn't know how to diagnose or treat me within 20 min. It's hard to look for new doctors when you're chronically ill -- it's exhausting, especially if you have few spoons to begin with -- but worth it. I ended up getting some great recommendations for primary care physicians from my psychiatrist! It's worth it to ask around.

I wish I could I just found a gi and he’s leaving. I was also seeing a therapist and literally right before my third session she calls and says she is also leaving the practice. It’s really rough and takes a lot of mental energy to finding a new doctor especially when having extreme anxiety around found calls or if they will actually listen to you and not tell you it’s bs

I agree that finding a doctor who listens and stays up to date is important, but, not everyone is able to leave, or has options, and even if they do, searching for a good doctor can be costly (depending on insurance), and takes a lot of time and energy. When I lived in a different city, there was only one endocrinologist within a 2 hour drive of me, for example. At other times I was a grad student with a job and I knew I needed to change doctors but in part because of my medical conditions, I was too overwhelmed to find them. Then, when I did, the new doctors weren’t good either. It took me 5+ tries to find a good endocrinologist. Anyway, I’m not saying you’re wrong, it just might not be fair to tell people to “just” leave when their situations might be more complicated.

@aldrwytch No you're right. I've switched doctors a thousand times and it IS costly and taxing mentally. I do understand some people can't, but, the ones that can...should!

@aldrwytch That said, many people do stay with doctors when they do have a choice, and it’s worth encouraging them to find better care (though medical anxiety and cultural norms like the “listen to your doctor, they know better” mentality also have a role to play)

I can't because I am a minor and am under my father's Healthcare and VA benefits. But I sure will find a good doctor when I can leave.
