Has anyone tried any medications for OCD? I don't want to use it as a substitute but I'm having a very hard time getting myself to even start therapy and I feel like medication would help me ease into it a lot better. I'm thinking about trying Prozac first but if anyone else has found something that works (I know everyone is different but I want to hear experiences) or has any advice it would be greatly appreciated!

I’m on prozac and lamictal for my ocd, and I started therapy right before I went on medication. I am still figuring out if it is the right medication, but I have definitely seen a big improvement in my ability to function.

Don’t take fluoxetine, especially without therapy. That medication made my ocd so much more severe and messed me up pretty bad.

I’ve tried several, but the antipsychotic Xypraxa helped my OCD the most. Dr will probably start you on an SSRI first, don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work, but also don’t let yourself be miserable if the side effects are too bad. Don’t be afraid to tell the doc to try a different one.

I have NOCD but I'm having a really hard time actually exploring it which I why I want meds to help with that. I can't go on Lexapro because it caused a manic episode (I also have bipolar disorder) and Zoloft triggers my boyfriend's migranes, which I also have, so I'm worried about that. Prozac seems to be the best option.

Similar to bun1995 I’m on lexapro and have blunted emotions. It helps my anxiety but the only way that I’ve “cured” my OCD is by Exposure and Response (ERP) therapy. Check out NOCD on the App Store to see how it works. It’s the most effective treatment for OCD

I’ve tried Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox, and Clomipramine and so far the one that worked best was clomipramine. The others managed to work and lessened my obsessions and need for compulsions but I maxed out on the dosage quickly. Medication definitely has been amazing to help for relief but was a lot of trial and error for myself, I’d just say keep your options open. I didn’t even know about clomipramine (nor did others I’ve spoken to) until my psychiatrist recommended it, yet it was once the gold standard for OCD. Not pushing one medication on you but more saying if one doesn’t work, don’t give up, keep trying other ones because relief is out there.

Prozac was helpful, but it sort of made me into an emotionless zombie. I ended up switching to Lexapro and the OCD is back but I feel more like myself. You could try the Prozac and see how it goes!
