Last Wednesday my therapist lied to me and I knew before I asked my dad to make sure but basically, she asked him how I was doing at home and she told me she had to talk to him about insurance. I see her tomorrow and I’m super anxious about confronting her about it because I think it’s a breach of trust because she lied to my face and I know that I should talk to her about it. But I have been thinking about it for a week, having panic attacks and even losing sleep over this. I don’t know what to do since I have to go tomorrow. Any advice?

It's not against HIPAA for her to ASK your father how you're doing. She just wants to make sure you're okay at home. She has your best interests at heart. Now if she had discussed information WITH your father that YOU told her in confidentiality, it COULD be a violation of HIPAA, but it depends on your age, and on your diagnosis.

@Yuka yes, especially if you are under the age of 18. Confidentiality laws with parents are less strict before you’re a legal adult.

Yeah, that's really messed up. I would talk to her about what she did and how it wasn't okay. You should look up the HIPPA rules before if you're in the US so you know what is and isn't acceptable legally. You can always get a new therapist for any reason. You doctors are there to help you and if you think you can get better help somewhere else, go for it. You are not betraying your doctor by going somewhere else. Even if you think it's a silly reason. (This certainly isn't a silly reason though!!)

@asdfghjklfancat I’ve been seeing her for a while but I’m a bit scared to find someone new if it comes to that because it’s a huge hassle and the new therapist always asks why you left the old one. It’s definitely not silly since that’s kind of why I have been so scared
