I've been struggling with motivation for years now, I want to be a game designer after college and learning how to program prototypes would be invaluable but I just can't bring myself to learn. I've had interests in art and music, just some way to express myself, and I'll think about it all day and I have this clear image of what I want to do and I'd make it if I just knew how. I just need to learn and I'd have so many more hobbies. anyone have advice? my therapist says to just force myself to do a little and it should snowball my motivation but I've yet to feel anything like that

I've bounced around a lot of ideas, getting motivated for short periods of time, maybe making a basic run script and then coming to a complete stop after trying to expand on it due to code errors. I've been really interested in tower defenses lately and they seemed like a nice place to start code-wise and art assets could be fairly rudimentary without being a detriment to gameplay. i wanted to solve one of my biggest issues with the genre, being that a select few towers can quickly overshadow all others and the winning strategy is to spam as many of it as possible. I intend to solve this by making it a roguelike, so you get a new set of towers each time you play and you have to come up with new strategies as you progress through a run. i learned some basics of Unity earlier today and intend to try to learn more tommorow, but I'm worried this motivation won't last once the next weekend comes.

@snez don't worry about if the motivation lasts, just don't push yourself too hard while doing that learning. small steps take you to your goal. just trust that as long as it has meaning to you, you will find yourself coming back to it, even if not in the ways you expect. and it is hard work that pays off massively. making video games and seeing them in action is so excitinggg also. i would play the absolute Fuck out of a roguelike tower defence game ..v.. idk how intensely i can help with making it, but feel free to dm if youd like input, problem solving or testing...

you could always start with the easier pieces for your maybe more "fun" skills, so if you have a solid art background you could start with concept art, portraits or sprites, landscape stuff. making assets is a good way to get excited about how to use them and i found that i picked the needed code bits up along the way. music means sound effects too, so playing around with those can maybe spark something. what sort of game are you trying to create? 2d, 2.5, 3d? visual novel, jrpg, mobile games? something big and in-depth or something modest? what sort of setting, what game mechanics do you envision? maybe i can help somehow?
