Did anyone struggle with selective mutism from teenage years?

I have never been diagnosed with mutism but would only speak if certain If someone spoke to me. Otherwise I would not say a word if I didn't have to. I still do it now tbh.

i’ve struggled with it since i was 4 due to my social anxiety and autism. i don’t go mute half as much as i used to, but it still impacts my life greatly

I still do. And people get so mad bc they don't understand I can't even tell them I can't talk. Bc that requires more words. It's really difficult, so I know how hard it is to handle.

Only as a young child, but I did experience some humiliating experiences because of it. It went away when I started receiving treatment for severe Speech-Sound Disorder. I still have mild Speech-Sound Disorder after years of speech therapy, but also developed a permanent stutter at age 13. The stutter caused me to be severely harassed at my first job at 18, by much older coworkers who assumed I had an intellectual impairment.

I have really bad social anxiety and think I might have selective mutism too. What is the treatment for selective mutism and how can I get it? Also what is the treatment for social anxiety? I've had basic counseling in the past but nothing has ever helped.

@Dilly22 honestly I am almost completely recovered and ur not gonna like the answer bc it seems terrifying and impossible. But speaking from experience it is possible. Exposure. When u feel a thought or an embarrassing moment really question what was so embarrassing about it and think about the likelihood of that scenario ever happening. Ur brain takes things out of proportion with anxiety and this is the way to conquer it. I did this myself and not by therapist and I’ve done a very long way. I know it seems terrifying but take small steps to challenging those thoughts and doing things ur afraid of. It’s not a race it takes as long as necessary. U got this

@Livingasazebra Thank you so much for your reply 🙂 That's so reassuring to hear that it is possible. Just hope it's not too late for me🤞
