ive been trying to get on disability for 3 years now, and all i have to show for it is a bunch of trauma. Everyone who knows me, even my doctors, think i should qualify, but then I get denied and told theres nothing wrong with me. i know this isnt uncommon, but im just so tired, and my life is stuck on hold until they approve me and i need them to approve me because i dont have any other options and i dont know what to do in the mean time or if they keep denying me. Im so scared of been stuck like this for another who knows how long. plus i keep getting told im doing it wrong but no one will help me do it right (no one i know knows how to do it either.)

Get a lawyer.. most of them you don’t have a pay until you receive back pay and start receiving your money. That’s my plan.

Thank you everyone for your support, i feel a bit less upset than i did yesterday. Im going to keep trying to find a lawyer that will work with me, and i might try to go to my social security office and talk with them, see if they can help at all. The hard part is theyre an hour away and I can't drive, so my mom will have to take me, but she works so finding a day may be difficult. Still, it was really helpful to be reminded that I'm not alone and this is a real problem with the system, not me doing anything wrong. Thank you.

This might be silly of me but have you tried googling answers? Have you managed to get a letter from your doctor/physical therapist/specialist. That could back up the information you state on the form?

@NatShann ive gotten letters from doctors and my therapist, thankfully basically everyone whos seen me agrees with me and is willing to send it whatever i need and my medical files. Its just hard knowing what the disability people need/want sometimes. Ive tried googling what i can, but even finding the right thing to search can be hard.

Hi love. My story was the same aged 14 - 30. I was diagnosed with Bi Polar Type 2, Dysthymia, Severe Depression and Anxiety, Borderline Personality Disorder and CPTSD! Turns out I just have a learning disability! It came to my attention I might have one last year after listening to Gabor Mate. I waited for a referral for an assessment through the NHS and, due to an admin error, it was not done until December when it was made in May. I was then told it was a 3 year waiting list. I am on benefits and used money left to me to my late (and incredible) grand mother to have a private assessment two weeks ago and I was diagnosed two days later. I am happy to give advice to anyone around misdiagnosis, neurodiversity and/or disability. Top tips: Speak to the charity Mind and get an advocate to go with you to all appointments. Get involved in expert by experience / lived experience roles in the NHS to grow confidence in listening to your heart and mind and creating positive change for others through telling your story. Find your community. Search discord (an app) to find people in the same boat as you and support each other. Research the difference between the medical model and social model of healthcare. It’s incredibly affirming. You are not alone. I was addicted to crystal meth a year ago because I was so unhappy and lost. I stopped listening to the system, professionals and did my own research. Bookmark articles (that have citations to medical journals at the bottom of the page) and show your doctor. Do not give up. Stay curious and, MOST OF ALL, be kind to yourself. I cannot stress this enough. You are not broken. It’s just a broken system. 💕

I got a lawyer. Many or maybe even all depending on the state only get paid if you win. They take a small percentage of the back pay.

@TunaGoon i had a lawyer the first time, but it was an entire law firm and i was just helped by whoever was available at the time and it felt like no one really knew my case or what was going on. Were trying to find someone else who i can actually have a single lawyer with and can meet with face to face (it was the height of covid before) because i dont do as well on phones, but the lawyer i met with today seemed really disinterested and unhelpful. I know this is what i need to do, it was just another blow.

It may be a good idea to consider getting in contact with citizens advice, that's what I'm doing at the moment, they will help you to fight the decision.

@PinkPsyduck there are sometimes disability advocacy groups in the US that can help. I managed to get it first try, but only because I had a social worker assisting with my case from a program. And I lived in a very rural part of Massachusetts at the time.
