Postmenopausal bleeding refers to vaginal bleeding occuring more than a year afte the last menstrual bleeding. Postmenopausal bleeding can be caused by many things; Polyps, fibroids, infections, hormone replacement therpay, uterine cancer, endometrial cancer, endometrial hyperplasia, cervical cancer, and cervicitis are some of the causes for abnormal uterine bleeding.

Signs & symptoms

Vaginal bleeding is the main symptom. If the bleeding is very heavy, the patient may suffer from anemia signs- pallor and fatigue.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis for postmenopausal bleeding starts with medical history and a pelvic examination, including pelvic US. Then, other tests may be performed such as pap smear, blood tests, endometrial biopsies and hysteroscopy.

Treatment

Postmenopausal bleeding treatment depends on the reason causing it. Some of the treatments may include Antibiotics, estrogen, progesting, dilation and curettage, endometrial ablation and hysterectomy.
