Patellar tendinitis, also known as jumper's knee, is an inflammation of the patellar tendon, which connects the kneecap (patella) to the shinbone (tibia). This condition is often caused by repetitive stress or overuse, especially in activities involving jumping or running. It primarily affects athletes but can also occur in non-athletes who engage in repetitive knee movements.

Signs & symptoms

- Pain just below the kneecap, which may worsen with activity - Swelling or tenderness in the area of the patellar tendon - Pain during or after physical activities like running, jumping, or climbing stairs - Stiffness or reduced flexibility in the knee - Pain when pressing on the patellar tendon

Diagnosis

- Physical Examination: A healthcare provider assesses pain, tenderness, and swelling around the patellar tendon. - Ultrasound or MRI: Imaging tests to visualize inflammation or structural changes in the tendon. - X-rays: Used to rule out other conditions or bone abnormalities, though not typically used for diagnosing tendinitis itself.

Treatment

- Rest: Reducing or modifying activities that exacerbate the pain. - Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area to reduce inflammation and pain. - Pain Relievers: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain and swelling. - Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen and stretch the muscles around the knee, improving flexibility and reducing strain on the tendon. - Corticosteroid Injections: In some cases, to reduce severe inflammation. - Surgery: Rarely needed but may be considered if conservative treatments fail and symptoms persist.
